Iello Games has done it again! In King of Tokyo, a GA favorite, families could have ridiculous fun as giant monsters slapping each other silly trying to take over Tokyo.  With King of New York, Iello brings us all new monsters still slapping but also playing up their celebrity as they duke it out over all 5 boroughs of New York City.

King of New York is everything King of Tokyo should have been. You and up to 5 other friends get to choose from the six new monsters in the game:

  • Kong –  The Giant Albino Ape
  • Drakonis –  The Armored Dragon
  • Rob – The Giant Robot
  • Sheriff – The T-Rex
  • Mantis – The Giant Saw-Wielding Praying Mantis
  • and Captain Fish – the…errr. fish who wields a titanic-like ship attached to a chain on his arm.

(Of course it is possible to throw all of your King of Tokyo favorites into the battle of the Big Apple as well.)

A nice new addition to the game is that instead of having the one location for players to choose from, those who aren’t in Manhattan can move out to Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, or the Bronx. Also the dice have changed up for King of New York –  there is still the heart, the slap, and the energy symbol, but in place of the 1, 2, and 3s, we now have Destruction, Celebrity, and Ouch!

Another new mechanic is that each borough gets 3 stacks of 3 buildings to destroy. This is where the Destruction face of the die comes in. For each Destruction you roll you can assign one point of damage to a building in your borough.  If you end up dealing enough damage to wreck the top building in a stack, it flips over and becomes a military unit, which can also be killed using destruction points (not on the same turn the unit is revealed though). Military units are also where the Ouch! face of the die comes in – if you roll one Ouch! you take 1 damage per unit in your borough, 2 Ouch! makes the military units attack every monster in your borough, and 3 Ouch! die results causes all military units in all boroughs to attack any monsters in their boroughs. Also rolling 3 ouch! allows you to take the Statue of Liberty card, which gives you 3 Victory Points (VP).  We aware though that if someone else rolls 3 Ouch! results later,  they take the card from you and you lose 3 VP.

The Celebrity face of the die is how you score VP off a roll, when you roll 3 Celebrity results, you get 1VP and the Superstar card which gives you an additional VP for each Celebrity over 3 you rolled that turn. Also from then on as long as you are the superstar you get 1VP per Celebrity you roll.

Manhattan is the main borough in the game and functions just like Tokyo, meaning you gain 1VP entering Lower Manhattan, and while in Manhattan you Damage all other monsters, and their attacks all hit you. A new Mechanic is that Manhattan has 3 levels, lower, midtown, and upper. Starting your turn in Lower Manhattan gets you 1VP and 1 Energy, Midtown gives 2VP and 1 Energy, Upper gives 2VP and 2 Energy.

This game can run from 10-40 min depending on the players style. Recommended age is 10 and up however i have played King of Tokyo with 6 year old family members and it worked just fine.

Ticket To Ride http://www.gryfaliasaerie.com/ticket-to-ride/ http://www.gryfaliasaerie.com/ticket-to-ride/#comments Mon, 03 Nov 2014 21:29:25 +0000 http://www.gryfaliasaerie.com/?p=11664

Ever wondered what it would be like to be a Railroad mogul? Think you’ve got what it takes to reach your destinations faster than your friends and family? Then you’re in luck – Ticket to Ride is just what you need. Gameplay is straightforward — your job is to connect your destinations together. The more routes you successfully connect, the more points you get. Of course, your opponents are trying to do the same thing. Barcelona to Constantinople via Berlin? It isn’t how you get there… just that you do.

Several available expansions (including various continents and timeframes) prevent the game from becoming stale.

Want to take a ride before buying a ticket? We understand. Bring some friends into the store and pick it up off our demo rack. Sit down at one of our tables and play a game! But be forewarned… it’s addictive!

Settlers of Catan http://www.gryfaliasaerie.com/settlers-of-catan/ http://www.gryfaliasaerie.com/settlers-of-catan/#comments Wed, 01 Oct 2014 20:19:02 +0000 http://www.gryfaliasaerie.com/?p=182

Trade some sheep for some wood? This game is a classic. It’s been around since 1995 and once you’ve played it, it is easy to see why. This is another easy to learn game with some complex strategical possibilities. You play as settlers moving into a new land. You have to claim land wisely, as each type of land generates unique resources which you’ll need to accomplish… well…. everything. (It’s tough to build without wood, for instance. No grain means you go hungry. You get the idea.) The object is to reach the required number of victory points before your opponents do. One interesting spin to the game is the ability to trade. While it’s fun to stick it to your oppnents every chance you get (and you do get some), you’re going to need them (well, their resources anyway) at some point. A typical game lasts somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-90 minutes. You can play with 3 or 4 players with the base set. Numerous expansion sets are available, allowing you to increase that to 5 or 6, or even play with 2.

You may have seen it being played on The Big Bang Theory.

This is a great card game that is very easy to learn. It’s fairly quick, with a game lasting somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes. The object is simple: get the required number of victory points before your opponent does. To do this, you use your coins to buy cards and more coins which you then use to buy cards and more coins and so on. The problem is that your opponents are trying to do the same thing! It’s easy to play and would be a great choice for friends as well as families. You can play with 2-4 players. Unlike a lot of games, the 2 player option is quite satisfying. You don’t need a group to make it worthwhile. (A larger group actually adds to the complexity of the strategy since even more people are taking the cards you want to buy.)
